GB QV 1844 Entire from Chelsea Pensioner requesting pension receipt"Paid Tombstone Hand Stamp 

Paid Tombstone Handstamp and two indented Reorganised Penny Post Marks. Brentwood CDS in Black clear Jan 23 1844.

Written by John Fitzsimans, an out-pensioner of "Great Warley near Brentwood," Essex.

He explains that he had called on the Collector at Brentwood to be paid his pension, but through some mistake had not received a receipt for it. The Collector has directed him to write to the addressee requesting that a receipt be sent instead to "Hearts, Collector, No. 2 Philadelphia Place, Hackney Road, London," so that Hearts can pay him.

Signed "I am, Sir, your Obedient and Humble Servant, John Fitzsimans, No. 2 Stoneyard, Brentwood, Essex."

This is classic Chelsea (or possibly Greenwich) out-pensioner administrative traffic — a beneficiary writing to the pension office about a payment/receipt mix-up, routed through a local "Collector" who handled disbursement in the district.
